Finding authentic British afternoon tea in LA is not an easy feat. Despite studying abroad in London for a semester, my boyfriend managed to have never experienced afternoon tea. So, I made it my mission to show him what he’s been missing out on, and what better occasion for a special treat than Valentine’s Day? After relentless research, I picked Boxwood Cafe at the London in West Hollywood. Okay yeah, the name of the hotel made me a little biased towards it, but I didn’t like how many other places are either trying so hard to be authentic that they look matronly, or are overly modernized. And of course, there are a couple places that I simply can’t justify splurging money on.
Overall I enjoyed my experience at Boxwood, but I’m not sure it was worth the money. The food was great – my favorites were the blackcurrant scones. What was missing a little was sophistication. The service, decor, and atmosphere just didn’t make me feel as comfortable as I would have liked to be. Normally I’m not one to pick on service either, but afternoon tea is such a luxurious activity that I felt slightly underwhelmed. Nonetheless, we had a great time and until we get the opportunity to revisit London, this might be one of the best options.
